Shots fired at bar; latest in violent crimes in South End

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is searching for the person who fired shots into Stache House Bar, in South End, early Friday morning as employees were trying to clean up the business and go home.

Neighbors and business owners said a drive-by in the area is stunning.

"That's surprising," South End resident Chris Braca said. "You hear about what's downtown, but not down here."

Braca didn't notice the two bullet holes that went through the glass windows of Stache House Bar, on South Boulevard, until Channel 9 pointed them out.

A bar employee told Eyewitness News anchor Stephanie Maxwell about a dozen workers were cleaning after the bar closed around 2 a.m.

They said a suspicious car drove by about 30 minutes later and starting shooting.

She said everyone took cover.

No one was hurt, but Braca said it makes him uneasy to be out in the area.

"Two a.m. on a weekend,” he said about crowds that gather at the bar. “That could've happened. Someone could've gotten hurt. Wow."

Yousef Boyd owns a business in South End, and seeing the damage makes him more aware of his surroundings.

"There are a lot of individuals out there that are doing things with no regard for human life," Boyd said.

A Union County teacher was shot and killed earlier in September about a block away from the bar during a robbery.

She and her boyfriend had just left a concert and had been walking to their car.

Police have connected that case to a suspect who died in a hotel robbery two days later.

In August, CMPD said a man and his friend had walked out of Stache House when someone shot him across the street in the CVS Pharmacy parking lot.

Channel 9 reached out to CMPD to see if it is keeping a closer eye on the area.

There was a security guard walking the area Friday.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
