CHARLOTTE, N.C. - A local nonprofit is feeling the effects of the government shutdown.
Carolina Marines helps Marines in a number of ways. Normally active duty Marines would volunteer their time by working at the May and October races at the speedway.
But this year, the speedway was told the marines are not allowed because of the shutdown.
"I think the government should be ashamed of themselves for this whole mess," said Kathy Lowery.
Kathy and her husband, Brian Lowery are from Maryland and are in town for this weekend's race.
Like many Americans, they are frustrated by the standoff in Washington.
"I think they should get their act together and do what's best for the public. Stop being Republicans and Democrats and start being Americans again," said Brian Lowery.
The speedway learned on Tuesday nearly 60 active duty military members would not be able to volunteer at this weekend's race.
Speedway spokesperson Scott Cooper said, "Now because of the government shutdown, they've been notified they can't come and work at the speedway in that particular volunteer capacity."
More than 30 marines were supposed to work as ushers this weekend.
And the marines weren't the only branch of the military slated to volunteer. A smaller group from the navy and air force were supposed to work in concessions, something they had done during the may race as well.
"It's a true shame when you have people that want to come out, do a good job and do it for a fund raising cause that supports the community and now because of the government shutdown, they can't do that," said Cooper.
Cooper said while they were left with a small gap in volunteers, they were able to fill it and fans won't notice the impact on race day.
