Single-engine plane crashes in Maiden, fire department says

MAIDEN, N.C. — A small plane crashed in Maiden around noon on Thursday, a local fire department said.

Bandys Fire Department rescuers were near Laneys Airport on South Olivers Cross Road.

State highway patrol investigators said the pilot and passenger onboard were taken to the hospital but weren’t seriously hurt.

Troopers said the single-engine plane was trying to land at Laneys Airport when it overshot the runway. After trying to take off again, the aircraft hit several trees and crashed into the backyard of a nearby home, highway patrol said.

The fire department asked drivers to avoid the area because of the number of emergency vehicles.

The Federal Aviation Administration will be conducting an investigation.
