Special tribute opens at Charleston airport honoring church shooting victims

CHARLESTON, S.C. — The victims of the Charleston church shooting will forever be remembered at a special exhibit at the city’s international airport.

The Charleston County Aviation Authority Board transformed a space at the airport into a place where people can go to honor and remember the nine people who were shot and killed by Dylann Roof inside Emanuel AME Church.

Millions of people who travel through the Charleston International Airport will have the opportunity to see the special exhibit.

“We are the gateway to the Charleston region and we want them to remember what happened here, as well as to be inspired about what this community showed in terms of unity,” said Aviation Authority Board Chair Margaret Seidler.

Two stained glass panes are the focal point, which are similar to the stained glass at Emanuel AME.

There’s also a Bible on display that was owned by South Carolina state Senator and Rev. Clementa Pinckney, the pastor of the church who was one of the nine killed in the shooting. Another Bible is featured in the exhibit that is opened to the book of Mark, which is the Bible study lesson that was taught the night of the shooting.

Roof was found guilty on 33 federal charges and sentenced to death. He pleaded guilty on state charges April 10.
