Statement from the mayor on Citizens Review Board task force recommendations

Updated:

CHARLOTTE, N.C. —

Today, the Citizens Review Board Task Force released its recommendations for consideration by the Council-Manager Relations Committee on Monday, September 23.  As a member of that Committee, I look forward to reviewing the Task Force’s recommendations, but in the wake of Jonathan Ferrell’s death I want to clarify the role that the CRB is designed to play in our community.

CMPD Officer Randall Kerrick has been charged in the shooting of Mr. Ferrell and his case is now in the hands of the criminal justice system.  At this point, however, Officer Kerrick’s case does not fall within the purview of the CRB.

The CRB process is designed to provide citizen review of complaints regarding internal affairs investigations and contested disciplinary decisions.  Although criminal charges have been filed, no personnel decision has been made regarding Officer Kerrick and there is, therefore, nothing for the CRB to review at this time.

Again, I want to acknowledge the horrible tragedy that occurred on September 14 and offer my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Ferrell.  I would also ask our community to respect Officer Kerrick’s right to a fair investigation.
