Man killed in Iredell Co. officer-involved shooting identified

IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. — Iredell County deputies shot and killed a man who tried to assault them with an aluminum bat Friday night, the Sheriff's Office said.

When deputies responded to a civil disturbance call around 9:40 a.m. on Estes Road, residents told them a man was harassing and threatening people.

Clayton Millsaps, 29, then came out of the woods carrying an aluminum bat, officials said.

Officials said he then assaulted someone with the bat and attacked another person who tried to intervene.

The deputies, identified as David Golden and Danny Wyatt, said they continually ordered Millsaps to drop the bat.

When Millsaps charged toward the deputies with the weapon, they shot and killed him, officials said.

No law enforcement officials were injured during the shooting.

Golden and Wyatt have more than 10 years in law enforcement and have been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure in an officer-involved shooting.

State Bureau of Investigation officials are conducting an investigation, which is also standard procedure.

“Our thoughts are with everyone involved with this situation; however the suspect’s decision to attack several people on the property with a deadly weapon and then attempting to incapacitate or kill the officers forced the response from law enforcement.  The investigation is ongoing, but appears the deputies responded appropriately to the threat they and the others were faced with,” the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office said.
