Man wanted in Statesville shooting death arrested, police say

IREDELL COUNTY, N.C. — Statesville police arrested a man they said shot another man during an argument Sunday afternoon.

Officers were called around 1:30 p.m. to a home on Wilson Lee Boulevard and found a man inside suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to a hospital in Winston-Salem.

Officials said Anthony Eugene Harper, 51, of Statesville later died from his injuries.

Desmond O’Neil Thompson, 36, of Iredell County, was identified by police and warrants were obtained for assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury. After Harper died, the charges were upgraded to murder, police said.

Police were searching for Thompson. He was arrested around 1:30 p.m. Monday after officials recieved a tip.
