INSIDE LOOK: Steph Curry's trainer shares rigorous training methods

FORT MILL, S.C. — Charlotte native Steph Curry and his Golden State Warriors are one game away from claiming the NBA title, and the moment hasn’t come without some hard work.

“We developed the formula right here in this little box,” said Curry’s personal trainer, Brandon Payne.

The two met in 2011 during the NBA lockout. Curry was in Charlotte, rehabbing from an injury, when he met Payne and the two started to train. Payne is a Charlotte native turned trainer and coach in Fort Mill who has a growing list of who's now and who's next in basketball.

Payne gave Channel 9 reporter Dashawn Brown a behind-the-scenes look at the rigorous program he has created that now has Curry on the verge of another NBA championship.

“It’s fun to watch, but it makes my job a little bit tougher because he keeps getting better so fast that we have to come up with new ways to challenge him and new ways to get better," Payne said.

But it was a much different story in 2016, when the Warriors lost the NBA Finals to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

“We always let the experiences that he goes through the season kind of shape what we do in the off season,” Payne said.

Curry and Payne were back to work together in mid-July after the loss.

“When you’re involved with players like Stephen, on the highest level, there’s no gray area. We can’t be guessing. We have to be right,” Payne said.

So he’s crafted the training down to a science for Curry, working out his body and brain. Payne said Curry is still hungry to learn.

“He’s had to make himself this player,” Payne said.

Dashawn asked Payne what kind of advice he gave Curry ahead of Friday night’s game.

“Not a whole lot. I sent him a text last night and just said, ‘One more,’” Payne said.

Curry and the Warriors hope to sweep the NBA Finals Friday night. It starts at 9 p.m. on Channel 9 followed by Eyewitness News at 11 p.m.
