Storms expected for Charlotte throughout week

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — There are flash flood warnings all over the area and the rain keeps coming. Water was rising Sunday night near the intersection of Sam Furr and Northcross. It looked nothing like it did just two days ago, when the road wasn't visible, cars were stranded and Huntersville firefighters said they had to rescue people.

"It was just like a lake right there," Jeff Bernstein said.

"It was crazy," Steve Bryant said. "Water everywhere."
It has made some people in Huntersville think twice before heading through the intersection when it's raining

"They'll probably take different routes to get around," Bernstein said.

Caldwell Station Creek and McDowell Creek run under Highway 73, and with rain, water creeps up over the road and can become dangerous for drivers and people who live nearby. Highway 73 was shut down for miles on Friday.

Sunday, Eyewitness News talked to drivers who hope the rain doesn't get out of hand again. The roads remained open.

Heavy rain and storms will keep coming into Charlotte through Sunday and well into next week, according to Severe Weather Center 9's meteorologist John Ahrens.

The stormy weather Sunday is over the eastern edge of the area. As the area continues to heat up, more storms will develop.

By Sunday night, there will be several storms around. They could linger overnight and impact the morning drive, according to Ahrens. Most of the storms should ease up by 7 a.m. The break will be temporary as more storms will fire up again by lunchtime.

Severe weather appears limited, according to Ahrens. The top threat remains flooding. Any storm that develops could drop an inch an hour adding to the spots that have already seen incredible downpours.

The week's forecast remains stormy.
