CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The North Carolina Department of Transportation and Piedmont Natural Gas closed one lane on Providence Road in south Charlotte to investigate the cause of a sinkhole.
The northbound right lane at High Ridge Road will be closed while Piedmont Natural Gas crews look for the cause of the structure failure under the sidewalk. It could affect travel lanes on Providence Road.
Piedmont Natural Gas said the natural gas system in the area is safe. An engineering firm told Piedmont that the sinkhole was not created by the pipe maintenance work they are doing on the road.
Crews will make repairs once the cause of the sinkhole is located and then reopen the lane.
There is no estimate on how long the lane will be closed.
People driving on the southbound lane of Providence Road will not be affected.
