Students across nation call for action after Florida shooting

Students across the country are confronting lawmakers and leaders saying that it is time to end school shootings, change gun laws and ensure school safety.

Survivors from last week’s school shooting in Parkland, Florida boarded buses for the capital, Tallahassee.

In North Carolina, leaders announced on Tuesday that a new committee will focus on school safety.

"Now, we're just ready to join Parkland,” Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools student Jalen said. “Rally the troops."

A small group of CMS students gathered to discuss their plan of action.

"We're running out of states,” Jalen said. “We're running out of cities before this happens to us."

The Youth Council, comprised of high school students said the Florida shooting cannot be forgotten.

"Unless somebody talks about it, not just adults, nobody's ever going to care about it," student Amya said.

Students said that they want to take a multifaceted approach by talking to lawmakers, planning school walkouts and making sure that their fellow classmates are looking out for one another.

Most importantly, they want to keep the dialogue going.

"Two weeks, people forget about stuff, move on with life,” Jalen said. “No, this needs to be addressed. It's been happening for way too long."

The students would also like to see more in-depth lockdown drills in school.

"If there was a similar incident, this is what you can do if the standard lockdown doesn't work,” student Anaia said. “Just like basic self-defense maneuvers you can do, just in case the attacker does get in the room and you have time to defend yourself."
