Students to release balloons in memory of East Meck classmate

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — “Rest Easy” is painted on the spirit rock outside East Mecklenburg High School.

Students returned to class for the first time since unexpectedly losing one of their own, senior Chris Allen.

“We’ve been struggling today, but we’re getting through it,” said Principal Rick Parker.

Parker told Channel 9 that Allen, a football player, was well-liked and always smiling.

Allen was killed Sunday night at a house party.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are investigating and have been tight-lipped about the case. On Wednesday, they said they did not have enough information yet to make an arrest.

“I’m hoping they soon arrest somebody, so that way justice can be served,” said Michael Howard, a friend who has been in touch with Allen’s family.

“They’re taking it very rough. Of course, it’s a shock and devastation to us all.”

Parker told Channel 9 that the school had additional grief counselors at available for students on Tuesday. On Wednesday, students could receive counseling at a church next to the school.

Students and staff are planning a candlelight vigil or balloon release on the football field later this week.

Allen’s jersey will be on stage at the graduation ceremony in June.

“I’m going to have a seat for him at graduation,” Parker said while holding back tears.

East Baptist Church, next to the school, is inviting students who want additional counseling to join a youth group Wednesday evening.

Students plan to release balloons on the football field at 2:30 p.m. Friday in memory of their classmate. They are also planning to honor him again in June.
