According to a study by the Woodrow Wilson Foundation, only 34 percent of South Carolina residents could pass a citizenship test.

North Carolinians scored slightly higher, with 39 percent.
Researchers used a 20-question multiple choice quiz with questions taken from the actual U.S. Citizenship Test, and only two percent of South Carolina residents received A's.
On average, 36 percent of participants passed the test nationwide.
"Passing" the test requires getting above 60%, or a D.
