Sugar Mountain Ski Resort to open on Halloween for winter season

AVERY COUNTY, N.C. — Sugar Mountain Ski Resort plans to open on Halloween, which will mark its earliest opening in its 43-year history.

Several inches of snow had already fallen in the area by Monday afternoon, and more is expected. The resort said snowmaking began on Sunday and is continuing around the clock.

Prior to this year, the earliest that Sugar Mountain had opened was on Nov. 5 in 1976.
