Summer literacy program celebrates 20 years in Charlotte

CHARLOTTE — The Freedom School Partners’ Summer Literacy Program is celebrating 20 years in the Charlotte community.

The six-week summer program focuses on reading and social-emotional development. Students are provided meals and transportation.

This summer, kids can attend camps at 12 different sites across the Charlotte area. The group said it hopes to expand that number over the next three years, as well as recruit more staff.

“We’re at about half of where we were pre-pandemic. It was grinding to get back where we were. A big part of that is hiring college students during the summertime,” Chief Strategic Officer George Metz said.

>> Channel 9′s Gina Esposito spoke with a young scholar who attends the program. How he says it has helped him grow as a person, in the video at the top of the page.
