Suspect shot as he held a knife to clerk's throat

GREENVILLE, S.C. — Authorities said a Greenville County deputy shot a robbery suspect as he held a knife to a store clerk's throat.

Lt. Tim Ridgeway said a deputy shot the suspect through a window at the Garden Spot gas station about 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Deputies responded after a driver saw the suspect take the clerk to the back of the store and called 911.

Both the suspect and the clerk were taken to Greenville Memorial Hospital. Ridgeway says injuries to both men are not life-threatening.

Authorities have not released their names.

Ridgeway said the two deputies involved will be put on temporary administrative duty while the incident is reviewed, which is regular procedure when an officer shoots a suspect.
