Teen in critical condition after shot in the head, police say

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A 16-year-old girl is in critical condition at Carolinas Medical Center after police said she was shot in the head while sitting in a car in north Charlotte Sunday.

Officers were dispatched to the 1600 block of Vancouver Drive just after 2:30 p.m. Many neighbors told Channel 9 they ran outside after hearing the gunshots.

"I heard, 'pow, pow, pow' and then a screech up the street," said Star Jones, whose home is just feet away from where the shooting happened.  "The next thing I knew police were everywhere. They were picking up shell casings and the crime scene tape was everywhere."

Jones said she wasn't aware the person who was shot was a 16-year-old girl.

The victim doesn't live in the neighborhood where the shooting happened, according to a police report. The report states the victim was sitting in a car with two other 16-year-old girls and a 26-year-old man when an unknown suspect starting shooting at them.

Police said they believe the shooting may have been drug-related although the case remains under investigation.

"It troubles me. I don't even know what else to say. I'm about at tears now," Jones said.

The shooting troubles her not only because it happened in her neighborhood, but as a mother as well.

"They (children) have a view of life that they can't be hurt," said Jones. "I send her family my blessings. I send them good will, peace and understanding."

No arrests have been made. Police haven't released a description of the suspect.

The relationship between the four people in the car remains unclear at this time.
