Teen driver charged in crash that killed Hickory Ridge student

CONCORD, N.C. — It was standing room only at Laurel Baptist Church Friday as family and friends remembered 16-year-old Katelyn Ziglar, who was killed in a car crash Friday.

"She was the type of person that was sweet and honorable...she kept true to what she said," said Bradley Hopkins.

Highway troopers say Ziglar was riding in a car driven by 16-year-old Grant Lucas.

They said Lucas was speeding down Lower Rocky River Road in Concord when he lost control and crashed into a tree.

Ziglar died and another passenger, 16-year-old Eric Fox, was thrown from the car.

Troopers told Eyewitness News that they've charged Lucas with misdemeanor death by vehicle and speeding. He was also cited because nobody in the car was wearing a seat belt.

Community members told Eyewitness News that they are praying for Katelyn's family and for the two teens who survived the crash.

"To be a witness to other teens to use this experience for good (and) anything positive that can come from it," said Katie Harzing.

Family friends said both teens were still in the hospital Tuesday. Lucas was in good condition, Fox was in critical condition.
