Tenants given short notice to move out, apartments to be demolished

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Tenants of a Charlotte apartment complex were given two weeks to leave their property.

They said a note was placed on their doors informing them the property has been sold and that they have to move because the apartment complex on Harrill Street will be demolished on March 28.

“It's just devastating, 'cause what do we do from here?” Constance Simmons said.

Simmons said she paid rent in March to the previous owner before the letter was placed on tenants’ doors on March 15.

“We have an elderly couple that stays there and we have other people that stay there with children,” Simmons said. “We (are) concerned about their schooling. It's the end of the year It's devastating. What do we do?” she said.

The apartment complex is in a developing neighborhood between Noda and Plaza Midwood.

On Saturday, Channel 9 called Westwood Property Management, which was listed on the letter.

A man who answered the phone said to call back, but when Channel 9 called, nobody answered.

Charlotte attorney Eric Montgomery, of the Montgomery Law Firm, said the short notice could violate state law.

“First of all, it is highly unusual that someone would be given two weeks to move from the property, and even though there's been a change in the ownership, they should be given more notice in order to find a new place to live,” Montgomery said.
