Jury convicts Catawba Co. man in triple murder case

CATAWBA COUNTY, N.C. — A man on trial for the shooting deaths of three people in Catawba County was found guilty Friday morning in Newton.

Everette Hewitt was found guilty on three counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Wade Sigmon, Susan Miller and Connie Blevins.

The three were shot to death inside a mobile home near Conover in 2011. Police said robbery was the motive.

During testimony, Harold Propst, the owner of the gun believed to have been used in the killings, told prosecutors he heard the shots and asked Hewitt why he did it.

"What's the cause of this, man?” Propst testified Thursday. “He said, ‘Money.’ I said, ‘You have a job.’"

Hewitt had turned down an earlier plea deal and was facing the death penalty in the case.
