The Power Five conferences in college football should be called the Power $100M.
An arms race in college football is driving up the price of success, and one school stands out from the rest, having spent more than $200 million on its program over four years. During that same period, 30 other universities spent more than $100 million on college football.
All of those universities were members of the Power Five conferences: the Atlantic Coast Conference, the Big 12, the Big Ten, the Pac-12 and the Southeastern Conference.
It is no surprise those conferences have the resources to spend such sums on college football. Regionally, the SEC has a very loyal following, which plays into the money available for its college football programs. The SEC brought in $409 million in TV and radio rights fees and another $185 million from post-season events during 2016-17.
Check out this slideshow to see which universities spent $100 million or more over four years.
