Thief grabs shopper's money off counter

CHERRYVILLE, N.C. — A Cherryville couple experienced terrifying moments while shopping at a local Walmart.

The couple, whom WSOC won't identify, was standing in the checkout line, buying groceries when the thief grabbed their money and tried to run out of the store.

In the surveillance video from inside the Walmart, the victim was standing next to his wife and got the money out of his wallet to pay for his groceries.

The man placed the cash on the counter while the thief standing behind him got closer.

The thief swiped the money off the counter and tried to walk around the victim.

But the victim backed up, and the robber shoved him out of the way and both fell to the ground.

The victim laid there while the thief rolled on the ground several times before jumping up and running out of the store.
The victims couldn't believe what happened.

"I was just shocked," the victim said. "I thought maybe he was kidding when he grabbed the money, but he wasn't kidding."

"I screamed really loud. I want him caught so no one else will go through this pain. I had nightmares for two nights," the other victim said.

That thief was still on the run Monday night.

Police said he was wearing a khaki-colored jacket, trousers, possibly overalls and a gray toboggan.
