$12,000 worth of rare comic books stolen from NC store

WILMINGTON, N.C. — Police in Wilmington are searching for a burglar who they said broke into a comic book store and stole $12,000 worth of vintage comics.

Police said someone broke into Whatever Wilmington Sunday night and stole the comics.

The store's owner said it was apparent the thief knew exactly what they were looking for because they stole a specific group of comics.

Among the stolen books are the first Iron Man comic, the first Justice League of America, Walking Dead Number 1, a 1932 comic featuring the first appearance of Conan the Barbarian and Incredible Hulk Vol. 1, signed by comics icon Stan Lee.

Store owner Kenyata Sullivan said inventory is ongoing at the store to see what other items were stolen, but those books alone are worth $12,000.

He said it would be hard for the thief to sell those books.

"They’re very valuable, very rare, which almost makes me wonder what were they thinking because the books they stole, whenever any of these books changes hands, it's a big deal in the comic book community," said Sullivan.

He is more upset about the sentimental value the books hold. It took him 11 years to get one vintage issue of the comic "Weird Tales," and there are only about 100 copies of it available.

No suspect description has been released.
