The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services may have exposed the personal information of 12,731 Medicaid patients, officials said.
An email containing information about monthly assistance was sent to health care providers in November in an unencrypted email.
The email contained patients’ names, addresses and Medicaid ID numbers.
While DHHS cannot determine if the email was intercepted, it has no reason to believe the information was compromised in any way.
DHHS mailed letters to all affected patients and their guardians about the incident. The department recommended steps to protect against fraud.
If anyone is concerned about credit fraud, individuals can contact the following credit bureaus to ask that a fraud alert be placed on their account:
- Equifax: 1-800-525-6285
- Experian: 1-888-397-3742
- TransUnion: 1-800-680-7289
