Thousands without power in South Carolina

COLUMBIA, S.C. — (AP) Crews are working to restore electricity to thousands of customers without service after a winter storm dumped snow, sleet and freezing rain across South Carolina.

The state's utilities said Friday morning showed about 242,000 customers were without service.

South Carolina Electric & Gas Co. reported showed about 75,000 customers without service Friday. The biggest problems were in Aiken and Dorchester Counties.

Duke Energy reported about 50,000 customers without service in northeastern South Carolina. Florence County had the most outages with more than 15,000. Duke had fewer than 50 customers without service in the northwestern part of the state.

The state-owned utility Santee Cooper reported about 2,000 customers without service.

The state's electric cooperatives reported about 117, 000 customers without service Friday morning.
