Big rig jackknifes into Jersey wall, closing part of I-85 in Gaston County

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A portion of Interstate 85 was closed Wednesday morning after authorities said a tractor-trailer crashed into a concrete Jersey wall, causing another vehicle to collide with that barrier.

The crash happened around 3:30 a.m. in the northbound lanes of I-85 near McAdenville in Gaston County.

Officials told Channel 9 that the tractor-trailer was heading northbound when it jackknifed and collided with the concrete barrier, pushing it into the southbound lanes.

The debris from the concrete barrier caused three cars in the southbound lanes to crash, sending one airborne, according to troopers.

Paramedics on the scene said one person was hurt and taken to CaroMont Regional Medical Center in Gastonia.

All northbound lanes were closed for hours, while only two southbound lanes were open. Officials were able to reopen the interstate around 7 a.m. after removing the tractor-trailer and cleaning up the debris.
