Big rig crashes into barriers in I-77 toll lane construction zone

CORNELIUS, N.C. — A tractor-trailer crash on Interstate 77, near exit 28, shut down the southbound lanes for hours overnight in Cornelius.

According to state troopers, the driver lost control around midnight, hit a sign, then crossed the road, hit the concrete barricades and jackknifed.

The crash happened in the toll lane construction zone and took out several of the concrete barriers.

The driver was not injured, according to troopers, but he was cited for failure to maintain control. Motorists traveling south on I-77 had to be diverted off the interstate at exit 30.

A tow truck was able to move the big rig to one side of the road, allowing troopers to reopen one lane, however the left lane was closed for a few more hours.

Department of Transportation officials told Channel 9 they were able to clear the crash and debris, and reopened all lanes by 5:30 a.m.
