CLEVELAND COUNTY, N.C. — A passerby alerted officials to a deadly crash Tuesday morning in Cleveland County, and troopers told Channel 9 the crash likely happened Monday night.
Officials said 61-year-old Janet Helms was driving her SUV around 9 p.m. Monday and ran off Stroupe Road, near Sugar Hill Road in Lawndale.
When the SUV left the road it hit a ditch and then went airborne before crashing into a tree, according to troopers.
Helms was thrown from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Authorities said she was the only person in the SUV.
Troopers said a passerby spotted the crash site around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday.
