Trump's inauguration speech could set tone for immediate future, expert says

WASHINGTON — President-elect Donald Trump arrived in Washington on Wednesday, two days before he assumes the highest office in the United States of America.

Trump will be sworn into office as the 45th president Friday afternoon.

Eyewitness News reporter DaShawn Brown spoke to a local expert about Trump’s priorities and what makes his transition so different.

Eric Herberlig of the University of North Carolina-Charlotte said Trump’s speech could set the tone for his first few weeks in office.

“Usually, inauguration speeches have a very similar type of flavor,” Herberlig said. “They try to be visionary, they try to be inclusive. That's not Trump's style.”

Aides said the theme of his speech will be uniting the country and making U.S. first.

Aides described it as personal and about 20 minutes long. They said the president-elect has been practicing daily.

President Barack Obama, on Wednesday during his final news conference, offered Trump advice on the issues and said what happens next will be his call.

“Having won an election opposed to a number of my initiatives, and certain aspects of my vision for where the country needs to go, it is appropriate for him to go forward with his vision and his values,” Obama said.
