TSA offers new recommendations to keep airport travelers safe

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Transportation Security Administration is making new recommendations in an effort to keep travelers safe in airport baggage claim and other areas outside security.

The recommendations come after recent terror attacks at airports in Fort Lauderdale, Brussels and Istanbul.

Experts said they have a 10-minute window to reduce the loss of life during an attack at major transportation hubs like Charlotte Douglas International Airport.

One of the key points of the TSA framework is creating a joint operations center. Last month, City Council approved spending $1.4 million to design one at Charlotte Douglas.

Once built, it will house CMPD, TSA and federal agents.

The design phase will take eight months and construction is expected to take a year.

Leaders in aviation, government and academics came up with the framework over the last six months, which includes information sharing, attack prevention and public protection.

The TSA has not given a timeline for the rollout of the framework, but the group behind it will continue to meet to make sure airports are using the strategy.
