Man in custody after Union Co. manhunt

UNION COUNTY, N.C. — Union County deputies have a suspect in custody after a manhunt Wednesday afternoon in Weddington.

Gabriel Martinez Castro, 21, of Monroe, was arrested and charged with larceny of a stolen vehicle, breaking and entering, resisting arrest and other traffic violations.

Officials said a vehicle was reported stolen after a break-in at a home on Pumpernickel Lane in the Price Mill Subdivision in Wesley Chapel earlier in the day. An officer saw the vehicle and attempted to stop the suspect.

The driver drove away and crashed on Weddington Road near Underwood Road. He then jumped out of the car and ran, according to a captain with the Union County Sheriff's Office.

Nearly five hours later a K-9 tracked Castro 3 miles from the crash to Plymouth Drive off Potters Road in Weddington, where he was under a deck at a home.

Further charges are pending.

The following entities responded to the incident: North Carolina Highway Patrol, Waxhaw Police Department, Monroe Police Department and Stallings Police Department.
