UNION COUNTY, N.C. - A local high school student will face a judge in July on charges he raped another teenager.
Union County deputies arrested 16-year-old Daemon Ledford Tuesday on a charge of second-degree rape.
Ledford forced the alleged victim to have sex against her will inside his parents' Wingate home in April, according to court documents.
Authorities said the 18-year-old girl then turned to her school guidance counselor for help.
"She reported that this suspect sexually assaulted her. It is important that students do feel comfortable enough to go to their guidance counselors," said Capt. Ronnie Whitaker.
Investigators filed charges against Ledford after interviewing both parties, Whitaker said.
Ledford is a student at Forest Hills High School but students told Channel 9 they hadn't heard about his arrest.
"I had no idea," said Juan Alvarado, a senior.
Alvarado called the allegations a sad situation, saying he had sisters of his own.
"Given all the influence that we have here -- is to be positive -- he just did something that's not right, " Alvarado said.
Ledford is out of jail on a $10,000 bond.
