Union Co. neighbors prepare for fight against new, controversial development

UNION COUNTY, N.C. — A controversial development is in the works along Waxhaw’s border, and town leaders and neighbors don’t have a lot of control over it.

Union County officials are looking to develop more than 27 acres across from the Waxhaw Police Department, along Providence Road South.

It could mean major jobs for the area, but neighbors are concerned that more growth could mean major traffic problems.

Union County commissioners are expecting to get an earful from neighbors Tuesday night during a public hearing, where people will be able to weigh in on 199,000 square feet of stores, restaurants, offices and homes.

“This is going to affect not only the people in the local neighborhoods but I think, the city of Waxhaw as a whole,” said Brandon Childress who lives in the neighborhood right across the street from the proposed development.

Providence Road South is a two-lane road that is already sandwiched between several hundred existing homes. Ten of Childress’ neighbors, who spoke to Channel 9 off camera, said they battle traffic daily and are firmly against the development.

“We don’t have the infrastructure to handle something of this magnitude at this time,” Childress said.

Some residents in Waxhaw feel they don’t have direct control over the development that’s barely outside of the town limits. Waxhaw leaders, including the mayor, have spent months going back and forth with Union County officials over everything from traffic concerns to stormwater control.

Waxhaw’s mayor is asking Union County leaders to table their decision on the development for 18 months and create a task force to address traffic issues.

“Instead of adding more, which is great and brings jobs and we understand that, but you have to think about the infrastructure and people (who) are already living here first,” Childress said.

The public hearing on the zoning will be held during the Union County Board of Commissioners meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
