Union County DSS offering taxpayers free assistance in filing taxes

MONROE, N.C. — The Union County Division of Social Services is assisting taxpayers with filing their federal and state income taxes.

But officials say you must schedule an appointment.

The Union County DSS’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program provides tax-free preparation to individuals who have an annual income of $54,000 or less per year, persons with disabilities, the elderly and limited English speaking taxpayers who need assistance in preparing their own tax returns.

Volunteers who are certified through the Internal Revenue Service and have had extensive training and testing to ensure a quality return is prepared and submitted will serve taxpayers beginning Jan. 29.

Income refunds are usually direct deposited in the taxpayer's banking account within seven to 10 days.

The VITA site is located at 2115 W. Roosevelt Blvd., Suite 200, in the Monroe Crossing

Mall.

Appointment times are available each weekday between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m.

To schedule an appointment, call 704-296-4312.
