Utility work closes uptown Charlotte intersection for several weeks

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — On Sunday, a major intersection in uptown Charlotte closed due to utility work on a construction project, and it isn’t scheduled to reopen until the end of December.

Officials with the Charlotte Department of Transportation said East Stonewall Street between South Tryon and South Brevard streets, and South College Street between Morehead Street and Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, will be closed through Dec. 29.

According to officials, the closure is due to utility work ahead of construction for the Tryon Place Development.

Drivers in the area Monday said they're not looking forward to dealing with the closures.

"Coming in today was definitely a hassle," driver Jackson Roberts said. "That long amount of time is definitely going to be a strain, coming in. I hope they get it done sooner than that."

Officials said businesses, parking areas and homes will be accessible during the street closures, and noted the following detour routes for drivers in the affected areas:

  • Drivers traveling westbound on East Stonewall Street can detour using South Caldwell Street, East Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and South Tryon Street.
  • Drivers traveling eastbound on West Stonewall Street can detour using South Tryon Street, East 3rd Street and South Brevard Street.
  • Drivers wanting to access College Street from I-277 (John Belk Freeway) can detour using South Caldwell Street, East Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and South Tryon Street.
  • Drivers wanting to access South College Street from South Tryon Street can detour using South Tryon Street and East 3rd Street.

The roads are expected to reopen Dec. 29 at 5 p.m.
