CHARLOTTE, N.C. - It may have cost him a broken foot and part of his ear, but Anthony Pettiford wasn’t going to give in to the two men who tried to rob him outside his apartment in west Charlotte early Friday morning.

“They came up behind me put the gun to my head and said give me your money. I said I don't have no money. Nobody carries money anymore.” Pettiford told Eyewitness News Friday afternoon.

What was left of his right ear was bandaged. He had a large cut on the bridge of his nose and his foot was in a cast but with the help of his family and friends he had fought off the attackers and managed to hold one until police could get there.

Pettiford was working on his van when he said the two men came at him with a gun.

When he told them that he had no money, they tried to force him into his apartment and pointed the gun at his wife.

That’s when it got ugly.

“We (were fighting) out here for the gun and one gentleman bit me in the ear and the other one smacked me in the face with the gun,” Pettiford said.

That’s when his brother-in-law and neighbor jumped in to help.

“Yeah, bit his ear off.” said Rekm Stanley. “So we had to scheme on him get the gun away from him. We couldn't let that happen.”

Stanley chased one of the suspects down in the parking lot but he managed to get away.

Pettiford and his brother-in-law held Jatravian Robinson until police arrived.

Robinson’s right eye was swollen shut and he had cuts and bruises on his face.

Police took him to the hospital before taking him to jail.

They are still looking for the second suspect.

Pettiford explained why he decided to fight back.

“I was going to die anyway. You might as well fight. You have to fight to live,” Pettiford said.
