CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Friends and family are leaning on each other as they remember a man who jumped off a bridge and drowned in Mountain Island Lake.
Dozens showed up at the lake Sunday night for a vigil for Johnathan Cureton, lighting candles and releasing balloons in his honor.
Cureton jumped off the bridge last week so he could enter a Red Bull commercial contest on YouTube, but he never made it out of the water.
“I wouldn't have missed it. It means everything to me to be here to say my final goodbye to him,” said Margo Todd, who attended the vigil.
Cureton was a sophomore at UNC Charlotte with a 3.6 GPA and planned to play for the 49ers this fall. He wanted to be a dental hygienist.
