Rash of violence after triple murder puts Anson Co. families at risk

WADESBORO, N.C. — The Anson County Sheriff's Office issued a plea to the public Wednesday for help solving a series of violent crimes following a triple murder Friday night.

They believe some, if not all, of the violent crimes that have happened recently are connected and may be retaliation for Friday's murders.

Investigators said there have been three shootings and an attempted home break-in in which the homeowner fired shots at the would-be intruder.

Larry Burrus told Channel 9 he and his girlfriend, Sadie Campbell, were watching TV in their bed over the weekend when bullets started flying into their bedroom.

"He jumped on top of me. I said, 'Just hit the floor,' and he said, 'No, lay still, lay still.' That's what I did. I said, 'You shot?' He said, 'No. You?' I said, 'No.'" Campbell said.

"By the grace of God. That's the only thing that saved us," Burrus said.

In another shooting, a barrage of bullets miraculously missed an elderly man inside at the time of the shooting. Investigators said he was not the intended target. When investigators got to the home, they collected 40 shell casings from the front yard.

Channel 9 talked to investigators from Wadesboro police, the Anson County Sheriff's Office, and the State Bureau of Investigations who came together Wednesday to plead for the violence to stop.

"We're going to keep agents coming back and forth day in and day out to catch people who think this is just a game, just have no value for life," Special Agent in Charge Audria Bridges said.

Investigators identified Bobby Liles Jr. as a suspect in one of the shootings. He turned himself in Wednesday.

But investigators are asking for the community's help to solve the other crimes.

"People deserve the right to be in their home safe," Wadesboro police Chief Thedis Spencer said.

The violence has escalated in the days since three men were shot and killed inside Mister D's Bar and Grill on Friday night.

The man charged in the triple homicide faced a judge at the courthouse Monday for the first time. Robbie Harris was denied bond.

Police said he had an ongoing feud with at least one of the men shot and killed.

The victims in the triple homicide are Mareco McNair, Ja’Ques McBryde and Thomas Maye III.
