Uptick in Charlotte's violent crimes raises concerns for CMPD

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police revealed staggering numbers Wednesday morning on violent crimes that are happening all across the city.

So far this year, Charlotte has had 982 robberies compared to 911 at the same time last year.

The announcement came just hours after a pizza delivery driver was set up Tuesday night by a couple of gunmen on Granstark Court in northwest Charlotte.

"When you have a gun in your face, you are almost in a state of shock," said the driver who did not want to be identified.

She went to the home around midnight to deliver a pizza when two men pulled a gun on her.

"I let him take the money, take the deliveries, take the car and everything in it so I could stay alive," she said.

"We use the laboratory and everything we can to bring these suspects to justice," said Sgt. Brian Scharf, who heads the robbery unit.

The unit clears about 45 percent of cases received, which is a good number, compared to other departments.

Scharf said two of the suspects they arrested were responsible for a total of 48 robberies alone, one of them was identified through the use of DNA.

But despite that statistic, the pizza delivery driver said she doesn't want to take the risk and quit her job.

"It's very scary and a lot can go through your mind in that moment," she said.

Her car was ditched in an apartment complex near Northlake Mall.

Police have processed it for fingerprints.

On a positive side, overall crimes are down almost 4.5 percent.
