VP Joe Biden visits CPCC in Charlotte Monday

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Vice President Joe Biden championed Central Piedmont Community College during a visit Monday for its role developing America's workforce.

Biden called CPCC a "heckuva operation."

Biden was introduced by Michelle Lopez, a once-underemployed CPCC graduate who came back to school to take part in the "Reach I.T." program.

The program is geared toward preparing people affected by the great recession for careers in information technology. It has received Department of Labor funds through a grant.

"[It was] an opportunity, that bridge of being able to go back to school and not only go back to school but apply those skills and become more marketable," Lopez said.

Biden focused his speech on workforce development and the Obama administration's efforts to support community colleges.

"The difficult decisions have resulted in finally in the one thing Barack, the president, and I wanted to see happen. This is all about the middle class," Mr. Biden said.

CPCC has been a popular site for politicians on both sides of the aisle.

Gov. Pat McCrory stopped at the campus on a tour around the state in March touting the Connect NC bond. It will invest $980 million into the state's 17 universities, including CPCC.

It's all a show of how important the middle class vote is, and how important community colleges are in supporting that class.

"[CPCC is] an example, they're actually high up on the chain of community colleges for the quality of work that they put out," Lopez said.

Biden talks about future with Erica Bryant

Channel 9 anchor Erica Bryant spoke to Biden one-on-one afterward about Hillary Clinton’s health and the role he would want to play in a Clinton administration

In the race for the White House, questions have turned Monday to Clinton battling pneumonia.

“I'm confident she will be back on the trail soon. I'm confident antibiotics will knock it out. I'm confident she is in good health,” Biden said.

Biden told Bryant he's worked with Clinton for years and never questioned her health or stamina for the job.

Biden said Clinton’s staff will release her medical records, and then he took a jab at Donald Trump.

“They're going to make the docs available. I just wish he'd do the same. It's amazing how transparent Hillary is and this guy won't let us know what his taxes are,” Biden said. “His own running mate has already released his taxes."

The vice president plans to campaign for Clinton even more now leading up to the general election.

“If she wins the presidency, would you like a role in her cabinet?” Bryant asked.

"No, I wouldn't, but I'd do anything I can to help her,” he said.

Biden’s already found a role close to his heart. After his son Beau died from brain cancer, President Obama asked the vice president to take up the Cancer Moonshot program, breaking down barriers that can delay patient access to life-saving treatment.

Clinton already asked Biden if he would continue that work, and he said yes.

“We take records from the National Cancer Institute and the VA and the University of Chicago and put them all online and all researchers can get them,” Biden said. “I'm really encouraged. I think we'll be able to do in five years what it would take in 10. I believe we're making real progress.”
