• Water main break shuts down part of North Tryon

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - It could be Thursday before a major street leading into Uptown is back open.

A water main burst on inbound North Tryon between 36th and Atando Avenue.

CMUD crews said a 12-inch pipe ruptured around 1 o'clock Christmas morning.

The crews cut a massive hole in the center of the road to repair it.

North Tryon between 36th and Atando Avenue is now closed to drivers.

There is minimal traffic on the road because of the holiday so there were no delays on Christmas morning.

But we're told that after CMUD fixes the pipe, it will be up to NC DOT crews to repair the road and that process could take until Thursday.

One cab driver told us that could pose some problems as drivers head back to work or out for holiday shopping.

Message boards alert drivers to detour around the area.

Drivers can get around the closure by making a left on 36th Street, then taking a right onto Davidson which goes into Uptown.

Drivers can also turn left on 36th Street, right onto Davidson, then right on Matheson to get back onto North Tryon.
