NTSB releases preliminary report on plane crash Dale Earnhardt Jr., family escaped

The National Transportation Safety Board released a preliminary report on the plane crash that NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt Jr. and his family escaped last week.

The report says airport surveillance video captured the initial touchdown on the runway at the airport in Elizabethton, Tennessee, and parts of the accident.

Monroe High honors teen police say was killed by father

The Union County community is mourning the loss of Zaria Burgess. The 15-year-old Monroe High School sophomore was eager to join the dance team this school year.

"She was a part of the Red Diamonds dance team and the Red Diamonds name means so much, because Red Diamonds are rare," said Alan Sturdivant, who is the band director at Monroe High School. "And we know diamonds are forever, so her spirit is going to live on with us forever."

Zaria was allegedly killed by her father Sunday morning.

Joshua Burgess turned himself in Sunday, and he admitted to the murder. He's now facing several charges, including first-degree murder and statutory rape.

Panthers optimistic Cam Newton will be ready for opener

Panthers general manager Marty Hurney is "cautiously optimistic" Cam Newton will be ready for the Sept. 8 regular season opener against the Los Angeles Rams after the quarterback suffered a left mid-foot sprain in a preseason game.

Newton injured his foot in Carolina's 10-3 loss Thursday night at New England on a sack.

"Obviously, we hope that Cam is OK," Panthers tight end Greg Olsen said after the game. "On top of that, offensively, we were not very good."

Body camera video released from deadly police chase in Gaston County

Channel 9 obtained body camera video from a deadly police chase last month in Gaston County.

In the video, the driver of the car being chased, Joshua Soule, can be heard saying, "Please don't let nobody be hurt!"

One person was killed and another was seriously hurt when hit by Soule's vehicle while walking on Rankin Avenue in Gastonia, officials said.

NC 9-year-old shot, killed in car was on the way to get snow cone

A drive-by shooting in Durham has killed a 9-year-old boy and injured an 8-year-old boy, motivating some leaders to speak out against gun violence.

News outlets report 9-year-old Zion Person was shot and killed Sunday night in Durham. Police said the unidentified 8-year-old suffered an arm injury but would be OK.

"Now my sister's got to bury her son," Zion's aunt, Danyell Ragland said. "He ain't nothing but 9. He didn't even go through life yet. He was just getting started."
