Winthrop University resumes business after suspicious box investigation

ROCK HILL, S.C. — Operations at Winthrop University have returned to normal following investigation of a suspicious small package found outside Tillman Hall around 2 p.m. Wednesday.

Winthrop University Police Department and the Rock Hill Police Department Bomb Squad responded to the scene,  conducted an X-ray examination of the small box and determined it was not a threat.

Officers will continue their investigation into the source of the package, which was duct-taped to a sundial/birdbath along a campus walkway.

No evacuation was ordered, but employees in adjacent buildings were told to stay away from windows until the package was examined. Normal operations resumed about 90 minutes after the WUPD received a report about the box from a female student.  WUPD investigation into the matter will continue.
