Witnesses: Innocent drivers, police cruiser hit during Charlotte chase

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Innocent drivers and even a police cruiser were hit during a chase Wednesday afternoon in north Charlotte, witnesses told Channel 9.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said an officer ran the 18-year-old suspect's tag and it came back as a stolen vehicle.

The officer tried pulling the suspect over, but the driver backed up and hit the officer's patrol car, and then the chase began, according to authorities.

At one point, the suspect jumped and ran from the vehicle in a neighborhood near Dalton Avenue and North Tryon Street, and police swarmed the area.

The suspect was tracked by K-9 unit and was taken into custody, according to police.

Channel 9 saw the suspect in the back of a patrol car, right in front of a daycare center that was filled with children.

"We're just glad that the police was there. We don't know why they came in this direction," said Henry Parks, with the Lockwood Child Development Center.

The suspect suffered a minor injury from the K-9 unit, police said.

No one else was hurt during the pursuit.

The suspect's name has not been released.
