Warrant obtained for 17-year-old accused in attempted sexual assault in Plaza Midwood

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg police are investigating an attempted sexual assault in Plaza Midwood.

Officers said a 34-year-old woman was watering flowers in her yard around 7:45 a.m. Tuesday on Norcross Place, in the area of Midwood Park, when a man walked up and asked her if she had seen his lost dog.

The woman told officers that when she turned her back while talking to him, he grabbed her and attempted to sexually assault her. The woman said she was able to fight him off.

Investigators obtained warrants for a 17-year-old male. The warrants will be served once he is released from a medical facility, police said.

Anytime you hear a helicopter circling, it's usually cause for concern and being where it was with proximity to the park and the day care, (it) is especially concerning," nearby resident Jordan Abshire said.

There have been several home burglaries, four violent crimes, one aggravated assault and three strong-armed robberies in the last five months within a half-mile radius of where the incident happened.

"I want to feel good about where I live and this has kind of made me question it a little bit, but I believe in my neighborhood very much," Ahlim said

Police have not released a description of the suspect.

CMPD has increased patrols in the area, and has investigative units searching and canvassing the neighborhood throughout the day.

Anyone with information is asked to call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
