Woman beaten, robbed Sunday afternoon in north Charlotte neighborhood

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police are investigating the Sunday beating and robbery of a 25-year-old woman in a north Charlotte neighborhood.

Even more troubling, the crime happened in broad daylight.

Police were called to Colorado Avenue off North Graham Street around 4:15 p.m.

A report filed with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department said some unknown men hit the woman in the back with an unknown object, breaking her ribs and puncturing her lung.

After that, police say, the suspects took money out of the woman’s hand.

The woman was hospitalized at Carolinas Medical Center -- Main, according to her family.

The mother of the woman said the victim and her boyfriend had gone to the neighborhood to visit some friends. She told Channel 9 she didn’t know who attacked her daughter. The mother didn’t want to comment further, telling Channel 9 the family is still trying to find out exactly what happened.

The crime reportedly happened in a neighborhood and during a time when many people were home.

“The police man knocked on the door and asked some questions,” said Henry Martin, who often stays in the neighborhood. “They said some woman got beat up.”

Martin said he was home around the time of the attack but didn’t hear anything.

Neither did another neighborhood, Jevaun McPhadden.

“To hear that, you know, puts you on edge, especially when you have kids,” McPhadden said.

Both men told Channel 9 neighbors often walk this particular section of Colorado Avenue to get to a nearby convenience store.

“I was actually about to walk over there myself with my daughter but now I’m not sure,” McPhadden said.

Neighbors said they plan to be more aware of their surroundings as police search for the suspects.

No arrests have been made in the case.
