'They had guns': 64-year-old woman carjacked outside Shelby mall

CLEVELAND COUNTY, N.C. — Police have arrested two men after a 64-year-old woman ran into a Shelby mall Tuesday afternoon saying she was carjacked at gunpoint.

Detectives said two men wearing hoodies and skinny jeans stole the woman's car around 2:30 p.m. in the Belk parking lot at the Cleveland Mall on East Dixon Boulevard.

Channel 9's Ken Lemon spoke to a witness who said she was driving by when the robbery happened.

She said at first, she thought she was watching a mother and son squabble until she got closer and saw the look of fear on the victim's face.

The victim told 911 dispatchers the armed robbers harassed her for money before grabbing her purse and driving away in her gold 2016 BMW.

"They took $21 and told me they would leave me alone," the victim said. "And they, the other one grabbed my pocketbook, and I said, ‘Give me my wallet,’ and I took my wallet out of it."

They also took her phone, so with no way to call police, she ran into Belk for help.

The men didn't physically hurt her, but she felt wounded.

"They got my phone. They got everything," the victim said. "They had guns, so be careful," she said.

Witnesses said a dark-colored Ford Mustang followed the men out of the parking lot, leading officers to believe there may have been a third person involved in the robbery.

Detectives told Channel 9 the victim's car was spotted in Charlotte Wednesday evening and the two men in the car at the time were arrested on unrelated charges.

The men will also face charges in connection with Tuesday's robbery.
