Woman dies after crashing into CMPD patrol car

A woman died after the car she was driving crashed into a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Department patrol car in the 500 block of Sugar Creek Road near Sofley Road Saturday afternoon, police said.

Police said a Honda Accord, driven by Lachandra Ciera McCorkle, 25, pulled out in front of an off-duty officer's patrol car at a stop sign, and the woman died from her injuries at the hospital.

Officer Wraith Muhammad was transported to the hospital with minor injuries.

Police said the officer is a community coordinator for the Metro Division and was headed to a community meeting at the time.

Corby Watkins said he heard the crash as he was working at the car wash along West Sugar Creek Road.

"It's tragic," Watkins said. “We ran over there to help her.. We just seen the girl in bad shape and the officer getting out of his car."

One resident said she has always been concerned about driving in the area.

"I do know this is a busy street and things like this can definitely happen and has happened because it's hard coming from out of any of these intersections,” she said.

Police said the crash is under investigation.

Investigators said speed doesn't appear to be a factor, but they are working to determine if the woman was impaired.
