Woman killed, husband airlifted after teen driver collides with motorcycle

WATAUGA COUNTY, N.C. — State troopers said a woman was killed Friday evening and her husband hospitalized when the motorcycle they were riding was hit by a car being driven by a juvenile in Watauga County.

Investigators said the female driver of a Subaru was headed south on U.S. 421 around 5 p.m. when she tried to turn left onto Old U.S. 421.

Troopers said her view was obstructed by another vehicle that was northbound in the turn lane and that she did not see the northbound motorcycle.

Donald Kluttz was driving the motorcycle and his wife, Carolyn, was a passenger, troopers said. The motorcycle and the Subaru collided in the intersection, and Carolyn, 47, was killed.

Donald was flown to Johnson City Medical Center with serious injuries. Troopers said the two were wearing helmets at the time of the crash.

U.S. 421 was closed for two hours while troopers investigated.

Charges are pending.
