Woman says scammer tricked her out of $2,000 on Facebook

A Burke County woman said a scammer tricked her out of more than $2,100 on Facebook.

Felesha Moody said she isn't sure how the scammer found her but that he messaged her on Facebook and told her she won $150,000.

She said he even sent her a picture of the cash neatly wrapped in a box with a bow.

The scammer said Moody just needed to pay some fees first for taxes, gas and hotel rooms for the UPS driver supposedly delivering her big payout.

"I feel ashamed. I feel confused. I feel embarrassed," Moody said. "I just don't want anybody else to get hurt or feel embarrassed or ashamed."

Moody said she wired the scammer the money and that he kept asking for more.

He even called her while Action 9 investigator Jason Stoogenke was with her, so she put him on speakerphone.

Stoogenke told the scammer, "I'm with a TV station. We're putting you on the news so folks know about you. You really need to stop doing this."

The scammer hung up.

If someone asks you to spend money to claim a prize, it's automatically a scam.

No legitimate company will do that because it is illegal in North Carolina.
